Martin Nunziata, partner and member of the Assembly Delta and Rio de la Plata shares his wonderful experience at the World Conference of the Peoples on Climate Change ...
U.S. AND CLIMATE CHANGE April 2010
Conference from Within
attended the World Conference of the Peoples on Climate Change (cmpcc) and The Rights Mother Earth "held in Tiquipaya, Cochabamba, Bolivia from 19 to 22 April 2010. Failed
the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009, where countries could not reach an agreement to combat climate change, the president of Bolivia, Evo Morales announced that he would convene a People's Alternative Summit of the World Climate Change.
Evo Morales, along with other Latin American presidents complained that the U.S. tried to impose a bit compromised and ambiguous document which was opposed to other countries to deny recognition. And so
19 to April 22 was developed in the cmpcc Tiquipaya and the Rights of the Mother Earth. The venue was the campus of "Univalle" (Universidad del Valle in Tiquipaya).
We knew the call would be important. But the number of social organizations, individuals, and countries represented who attended, far exceeded the most optimistic expectations (expected 10,000). More than 130 countries, 35,000 enrolled in its credential, guests, panels, self-managed events, stands, displays and regional food products, alternative energy, brochures, flyers, scheduled and spontaneous performances.
The diversity of clothing, skin colors, languages \u200b\u200band geographical origins of the event became a meeting multifaceted multicolor, warm, historical and transcendent. It is the first time that villagers around the world are expressed on an issue that involves us all. Until now these areas were reserved only for discussion between the governments of powerful countries. To do
organized 17 working groups, although as in every summit, comes a "parallel" approach advanced topics not covered in previous and report any irregularities in the functioning of the event. In this case, the committee 18, worked as the alternative to the alternative, as this was the alternative conference in Copenhagen.
Each working group elected to have the 2 presidents sure that at least one is a foreigner, who along with the secretaries and translators attended by ordering the proposals according to the subject, corrected the text of the document base, discussed and sometimes hotly debated. Finally
drafts were obtained later formed part of the final document to be read at a plenary general. This document does not already have it but when it is in our hands as we age.
participation via virtual begun sending the proposals before the start of cmpcc, and then could be submitted in writing and engage in face to face with the word live in that a working group had selected.
The working groups were:
01 - Structural causes
02 - Harmony with Nature
03 - Mother Earth Rights
04 - Referendum
05 - Climate Justice Court
06 - Climate Migrants
07 - Indigenous Peoples
08 - Climate Debt
09 - Shared Vision
10 - Kyoto Protocol
11 - Adaptation
12 - Financing
13 - Development and Technology Transfer
14 - Forest
15 - Carbon Market
Hazards 16 - Action Strategies
17 - Agriculture and Food Sovereignty
...
18 - Mining and complaints. (Parallel)
personally attended the Group 3, "Rights of Mother Earth" as a full group 5, "Climate Justice Tribunal." You could also send proposals via email to other working groups, which did too. While it took several proposals based on previous work that touched many of the issues, given the massive turnout, counting the benefits this brings, it is also true that the spaces for the verbal and written fell to its foundation.
then concentrated most of my intervention that were included in the laws of Mother Earth and the Climate Justice Tribunal the following proposal:
"As the damage to Mother Earth as they are of such magnitude that they can be classified as" ecocide "is equated to genocide, and therefore are considered crimes against humanity and as with human rights, causes no prescribe. Compliance penalties would only be effective and could lead to overcome, repaired the damage and complete the sentence. "
Beyond the long discussions that promote changes or inclusions in the original base text, the turnout was very rich and at times heated.
Persons over 130 countries with a common idea: "Save the Planet Earth, Mother Earth, Pachamama or Nature, with a variety of strategies and opinions, came together in Bolivia. Most condemning
System as the source of climate change, others Model Development.
There were proposals to change as the vegetarian diet, which suggests not eating meat. Had also requested a sentence of developed countries by large emissions of GHGs (greenhouse gases) and their lack of commitment to reducing and non-compliance of treaties and protocols signed by those countries.
They spoke of the urgent need to live in harmony with Mother Earth and were mentioned in many cases irreversible damage we are doing.
also were present proposals for alternative energy sources and criticism of the new "green business" working on the consequences and not causes.
A remarkable chapter was to observe the active and energetic women, originating or not. It was for me a given emotional to see empowered women everywhere. Undoubtedly, there are other times. I also think that were the majority.
The word heard after Mother Earth or Pachamama was Jallalla, which together meant that the adoption of a text or a paragraph, something like a consensus by acclamation.
say that the failure of the Copenhagen Summit became the birth cmpcc and the rights of Mother Earth with the assistance of Evo Morales midwife she delivered the baby.
is intended to integrate the documents made a presentation at the United Nations to declare in this area, as with human rights, the rights of Mother Earth. In addition to all these conclusions
integrate an inventory of proposals, convictions and efforts to force a real commitment to countries that are most responsible climate change at the next Summit to be held in Cancun, Mexico, in December 2010. There concur
organizations and individuals around the world to pressure their governments to present not committed to caring for the planet Earth.
A separate chapter was the opening and closing acts of the cmpcc. The first was in the football stadium Tiquipaya. Many, many people, cheerful and a rainbow of colors. We met people from everywhere and even nuns salteñas in street clothes and paper hats and waving flags. Exciting! Evo said that was where the chickens and the coke that gave so much to talk and know what to press and with this information got rid of the deep, historical and transcendent event. Of course, lots of music.
The second was the closure in the football stadium in Cochabamba where he also was all color, joy, music and dance. It read a compact conclusions. U.S. representatives spoke, Nicaragua, Iceland, Cuba and other countries. The highlight was the long awaited words of Chavez and Evo, obviously very applauded. Finally Andean sets loud music well known in Bolivia with his percussion and vibration were sikus the heart and soul.
thus concluded the First World Conference of Peoples.
was for me an exceptional experience that far exceeds my expectations and my emotions came into play more skeptical.
I know I was in a micro-macro with a purpose and that not everything is pure. Always appear some of our little miseries which confirms that we are human. But we agreed on something: "You have to save Mother Earth."
wanted to share with you.
